Our local politicians deserve our respect and support

The tragic and horrifying death of MP Jo Cox at the hands of a hate-filled fanatic reminds us that representing the electors is a challenging role that makes local politicians vulnerable to criticism and abuse. It's our responsibility to treat them with courtesy and respect even when we disagree with them. If we are disrespectful and discourteous, constantly questioning the motives of our representatives for taking on this difficult task, we can unintentionally encourage hostile attitudes that have no place in a democracy.

What sadly happened to Jo Cox also reminds us that we need to show more gratitude and appreciation for what politicians do. We need to be more balanced in how we think about them. We have a dedicated local MP and a team of local councilors who do their best to look out for us.

The people who are elected to represent us, or who stand for election, deserve our respect and support for 'embodying' democracy for us. What would we do without them?
